Everything on Sale!

Starting on Boxing Day, everything in the shop will be reduced by 20-60%. We need to clear out all of our merchandise by the end of January, so help us out!

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that Nokomis Clothing will be closing its doors at the end of January 2011. After eight years of having the privilege of providing Edmontonians with Canadian designed and produced clothing and accessories, it is time to close the chapter. Economics are, of course, the reason for our departure.

I want to thank each and every customer we have ever had. Your loyalty, support and to be frank, purchases, has made the world of difference in my life. I have had the ability to live my dream: to be an entrepreneur, just like my own grandfathers. Thank you for this opportunity. I am blessed to have worked with so many amazing designers: you have inspired our entire community. And thank you to all the noko girls: you’ll always be my family.

Meanwhile, you know how much I LOVE sales! We’re going to be having a doozy of one. Currently, select merchandise is 30-50% off at the shop, and more deals will be found starting Boxing Day. Stay tuned.

FAQ’s

1. Where am I going to shop now?

There is an array of local boutiques you can support; as well many of our talented designers have online stores. Refer to our website for links.

2. Why are you closing?

That is a complex question and the simplest answer is: economics.

3. What are you going to do with all the grannies?

I am asking that everyone who has a granny up on the wall come into the shop to claim her back. That way you can take a piece of Nokomis home with you. The rest will be coming home with me!

4. Will holiday gifts still be exchangeable?

Absolutely! All gifts, purchased before December 25^th, are available to be exchanged until January 9^th. Please ask for a gift receipt when purchasing gifts.

5. Will I still be able to redeem Gift Certificates and Store Credit?

Absolutely!

6. Will I still be able to purchase Gift Certificates?

Absolutely! Though, each purchaser will be made aware of the situation, that we will be closing as of the end of January, and that the gift certificate is to be redeemed before then.

7. What are you and the staff going to do?

Besides load up on pretty things before the shop closes, we are all going to find new paths of employment, though noko will be dear in our hearts.

8. Is your beautiful green couch for sale?

It sure will be, along with our mirrors, gold racks, tables, displays, desks and so much more!

9. Will you ever open up Nokomis again?

I have been with Nokomis for all 8 years, 5 as the manager and 3 as the owner. It has been such a journey for me; I’ve loved every step of it. But I am ready to move on. So, no. But if you’ve ever dreamed of opening up your own shop, here’s the chance!

10. I’m really going to miss Nokomis, what can I do?

We are really going to miss you, too. Meanwhile, pop by the store, give us a hug, and buy yourself some pretty treasures. We still need your support.

Say hello to my newest brain child, 30 Days of Edmonton. (Isn’t she beautiful???) This project is close to my heart, because, well…I really like to shop, and eat, and be involved in my community. So, I decided to highlight a few of my favourite places throughout Edmonton that are locally owned…and by a few, I mean 30. That counts as a few, right? Ok, so the dictionary might argue otherwise. Originally I had set out to accomplish this mission before Christmas, and then I found out that I may be a little crazy in thinking that would actually be possible…but you know what? I’m going to go for it anyway! (yikes!) Hello Lovelies,

Nokomis’ unofficial occupational health nurse (-ing student) here. I hope you have all been enjoying the uncharacteristic balmy weather and taking every chance to get outside! I have only just emerged from the library with the tell tale post midterm pallor and squinting eyes. It has been nice to spend an afternoon in the store, reintegrating into society, and eyeing all the pretty clothes and jewels we’ve received in the past few weeks.

One thing that helps me to get up and get to the library on weekends is to say no to the sweatpants and pick out a stylish and comfortable ensemble instead. In a program where I spend a significant amount of time in scrubs, why waste an opportunity to wear my favorite pieces?

Its finally time for the noko girls to steal the blog spotlight from Jessica and this time its my turn! It was hard only choosing a few items from a shop where everything has that magical quality but I (eventually) managed! My pick is very simple yet classic with a bit of a vintage twist. Its an outfit that's perfect for a night out at the Opera or an evening with the girls.

This stole is probably my most favorite piece in the store. It looks beautiful over a jacket or thrown over top of your favorite outfit to give it that extra special touch. The collar is faux fur and attached is a beautiful satin ribbon which you can tie into a cute little bow.

Who doesn't need a classic little black dress? This one is absolutely amazing. Its cinched at the waist to give you that flattering figure and the pleats on the back add a fun detail. Another of my favorite details on this dress is the neckline. Its boat cut neckline makes the dress sit just atop your shoulders making a lovely dip in the back. I love this dress for the fact that its simple but yet has those little qualities that make it so elegant and different than any other little black dress.

I paired this dress with a vintage inspired brooch. Its the perfect little touch to polish up any outfit.

Lastly the shoes! I am a vintage shoe fiend and I'm always drooling over the shoes that come in through Nokomis. We always have fun vintage shoes in the shop and they're only $35 which makes them even more drool worthy!

my charming grandma was in town this week, visiting my mom, sister and i from calgary. and what would a visit be without a shopping trip to nokomis?

dottie had no problems finding some new sweaters to try on! to the people who tell me the store is just too young for them: my 87 year old grandma didn't have any problems. age is just a number!

ginger the cat came for a little shop visit this past week. she was so adorable sitting in the front window i had to snap a few photos for you.

she's such an explorer, she loves visits to the shop. i think mainly cause she gets away from her paranoid and grouchy little sister, simone. ginger comes out of her shell at the shop and just wants to cuddle with everyone. kristena's black pants were covered in cat hair from ginger twisting in and out of her legs trying to get some cuddles in.

ginger is an indoor/outdoor cat, and as the weather begins to turn, she'll be making weekly visits to the shop, as long as we can find more successful ways to get her into her carrier.

us noko girls had a pumpkin carving party last night. it felt good to stick our hands into the gut of a pumpkin. we struggled with our artistic sides, but were all pleased with the final results. after we cleaned up we ran across the street to the princess theatre to catch this:

The studio is finally put together, which means: I can silk screen!

First, mix your base and pigments.

And voila! My first raven in years! It was a little shakey, but, hey, I did it! And the streaks just add character, right?

Success! I did it! Thankfully my SNAP class starts this evening, so I should be able to branch out soon!

Meanwhile, the more bag fabric the merrier. I hate to say it, but the big, major seasonal holiday is approaching, so we're going to need to stock up on bag fabric!

And I have to admit, I love heading down to the basement to work in the little studio! Up next: pillows and aprons! Cross your fingers that I make it work! xox.

The room is all painted, and now to just move everything in!

i started with the silk screening table top. this gem has been with noko for eons, and i was thrilled to have her back in our basement.

and this table was from my grandma and grandpa's. just needs a coat of paint and it's ready to go!

next up, standard ikea purchases:

this shelf became home to the noko silk screen frames. they had been hiding out in my basement, so i lugged them back to the store:

check out these beautiful mason jars! my grandfather had a very large collection of mason jars in his garage, which i now own. there are probably about 30+ jars, in a variety of sizes and shapes. these three are now home here at nokomis and inside they each have an air plant (which needs no soil, and only monthly watering). eden lilly will be getting in more air plants in about two weeks, so be sure to check them out there.

my grandpa was very proud supporter and believer in me and my entrepreneurial adventures. he was an entrepreneur himself, so i always love when his treasures make it into the shop. while he's sadly not with us on earth anymore, he's in my heart everyday. i miss you, grandpa! xox.

IF YOU BUILD IT (1/3)

as i mentioned this summer, i have started silk screening in the basement. i'm sill trying to master bag fabric, it's coming along slowly. i just signed up for a class at SNAP Gallery, so that should help speed things along. (they need two more participants for the class to run, so sign up! it'll be barrels of fun.)

we have a full basement below the shop, and it's always been kind of a dumping ground for old stock, fixtures, racks, fabric, cardboard and the like. there are two main rooms, one which stock is kept, and one in which we used to ship out stock when we had our house line. my plan was to convert the old stock room into the silk screening room and the old shipping room into the new stock room. but in the last 6-8 months there were both completely unusable. like, when you have one path that you can walk thru the room, but that's it. one path, where you need to walk sideways down just to get thru the mess. my mom started helping out at the shop, and we spent two solid days clearing out the rooms, packing things off to the goodwill and the eco-center. and voila:

this is what the room formerly known as the stock room looked like at the end of our two days.

there were still lots of tubs of american apparel stock and hangers, but maegan and i throw those into the mens bathroom, and we were ready to rock and roll.

i am the messiest painter alive. it wasn't until 6 weeks after this photo was taken that my hair was officially paint free.

we also cleaned out the back stairwell, which hadn't been done in the three years since we moved in. once the garage was cleared away, look at what we found:

the biggest worms ever! man, they were huge!

hey, check out this article in the montreal gazette (or edmonton journal or calgary herald) this past saturday, called 'Don't Discount a Career in Retail', featuring me! Here's my part:

Jessica Kennedy, owner of Nokomis Clothing in Edmonton, was entrepreneurial enough to buy her own fashion store at the age of 26. She admits she had her eye on being a buyer for a high-end retailer, but after taking a course in fashion management, she wanted to do more behind the scenes. With her own store, she says she gets to work with many of the country's up-and-coming independent designers. "I love visiting their studios to learn what's new and give them feedback on how things are selling."
The "joy of the job," as she puts it, is that she gets to do something different every day. "I'm not just a buyer. I do the marketing, planning, advertising, hiring, training, bookkeeping -I even clean the bathrooms! Every day is completely different. It's such a treasure because nothing gets boring. And I get to have a really great wardrobe. My closet is packed full."

noko night!

at the beginning of the month we had a little noko staff party, a happy birthday kaitlin and jessica, goodbye maegan, kind of party. it was a friday night, so the plan was to eat a little pizza and then go check out the comedy club on our block. sounds fun, huh?

our darling kristena surprised me with this yummy, jessica-friendly (read: wheat/dairy/soy free) cake!

and, if you know me, your average type A, virgo, you would know that i just HAD to throw a few games in there too. we started the night (after a few glasses of wine) with twister.

maegan didn't last very long (neither did kristena)

the last two! jill eventually kicked emilia's ass.

next up: pin the tail on the donkey. kaitlin was first up, and, i'll admit, i was a little cruel. after 20 spins, i set her off in the wrong direction.

but she eventually found her way

and even got pretty close!

maegan got a little lost

and jill got up nice and and close

gosh, she's cute.

in the end, emilia won the prize for pin the tail on the donkey, but she lost for keeping cake off her clothes. at this point, maegan threw a fit, and demanded she get another shot at the prize. i told her if she pinned the tail on the donkey, she'd get it. but if not, she'd have to lick the floor. she was game: TOTES!

i actually set her off in the right direction this time, but she didn't believe me. after a lot of farting around, she figured out she was getting closer.

she was the one that created the 'no touching' rule, but apparently feet didn't apply. we were also really cruel (again) and once she put the head scarf on, we flipped the donkey on her.

and she still managed to get it! and being the good sport that she is, she decided that even though we all said she could have the prize, she would still lick the floor:

after we wrap up the festivities at the store, we gather our stuff and head over to the laugh shop. we figured even if the comedian sucked, we'd still have a great time. fun, yes? uh, as it turns out, the comedy club on whyte ave is closed! booooo hissss.

so we headed back to the shop for more wine and hangouts! turned out to be a lovely evening!

Travelling Noko Bags

Our Nokomis cloth bags make the perfect lunch bags and library book bags. And they also make great travelling companions. I have brought mine to London, Paris, Montreal, NYC, LA, San Fran, Toronto, Portland, Las Vegas, Victoria and Montreal. I throw my shoes or scarves in them, my books and all my gluten free treats. And i'm not the only one!

My pal and edmonton ex-pat Laurel (now a teacher in London) sent me the sweetest email the other day, with a picture of her and her noko bag in Corsica. Here are her own words:

I keep meaning to tell you that my Nokomis shopping bags have always had an exciting second life. My first one (green and white gingham, got it years ago at the first Nokomis store down the alley when I bought a coral Preloved trench skirt I still wear) came on my poor-student's bakpacking trip all over Europe after high school. It was my laundry bag and got put through the wash by all kinds of Italian and Spanish laundry-service grannies.

The latest Nokomis shopping bag (turquoise with raven silkscreen, got it this summer with my new favourite grey jeans) just came to Corsica on a really challenging mountain hike. I meant to take a picture of it for you on top of the mountain but I was always too exhausted. Instead, here is a picture of it after the hiking week doing duty as a beachbag. (It also served as laundry bag and swirled around in the hugest Miele dryer I have ever seen.)

I'm sure that your little shopping bags are well-used and re-used all over the world. I've just always meant to tell you about how much I love mine.

I have to tell you this email made my week. Sometimes I get caught up in the day to day tasks: paying bills, ordering stock, making sales. I look at the to-do list I have to do each day. I forget about the bigger picture. This email was a nice reminder of just that. Thank you, Laurel.

Katie recently gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl, Éloïse Irene. Isn't she the cutest?

sorry for the lack of posts. i was away for two weeks, and had good intentions, but well, vaycays are vaycays. i also turned the big three-oh a few days ago. i'm very excited about this new decade. i've got a feeling that it's gonna be a good one. and speaking of birthdays, it's noko's 8th next week. we're having a party one week from today. more info will follow tomorrow for you! we love parties around here, and we hope you do too.

Things I Love: Summer Edition

Okay, so I skipped out on the Things I Love July issue, but well, as my mom would say: shit happens. Besides, a lot of magazines do a 'summer edition', squeezing together July & August, so why can't I?

1. Master of Business Administration. I've been giving some (sorta) serious thought to the U of A MBA program, as it's part-time, accessible and could be loads of fun (totally serious). But really, I'd rather have this: Crafting MBA. Megan Auman is a trained jeweler and silversmith, a woman dedicated to the crafting scene, and more importantly, someone who wants to help other crafters succeed.
I'm not a crafter myself, but I signed up for her (free) e-newsletter and have found it to be immensely helpful. She also does business consulting too, and has an awesome list of recommended books and even a book club! She's a smart cookie. And I know lots of you out there either dabble in crafting for pleasure or are trying to make a go of it. Please check out her site. Her blog constantly inspires me. Check out one of her old posts: 'stop using work to procrastinate from doing real work'.

2. Blue Hawaii. I've never been to Hawaii before. Some friends tell me it's super commercial and tourist-y, but I don't care. I must go to Hawaii before I die! It's on my list. But this section here is not about Hawaii, it's about an amazing band from Montreal called Blue Hawaii. This is the lead singer from Braids (one of my most favourite bands ever!) side project. Rafaelle is originally from Calgary (with the rest of the Braids gang) but they all moved to Montreal about two years ago. I love theses guys. Anyway, see for yourself. (I MAY have a slight girl crush on Rafaelle (above, left, obvs). I once got her email address from her after I stalked her at a Famines show at Tubby Dog in Calgary, and I fucking lost it! I'm still so mad at myself, two years later).

3. You know what else I love? Scarves. I'm almost happy fall is on it's way (in Edmonton, at least). Okay, I'm always happy it's fall, I just wish winter wouldn't be so wretched. Anyway, fall means scarf season. I'm sure most of you are like me, and we try and pull off scarves all summer, but sometimes it's just too hot. 4. Lastly, I am in love with the Beauty Parlour. They're been around for a year and a half and are located just a few blocks down the avenue from us. Yet I had never been in there before. I heard tons of great things about them and saw their adorable posters around town, but just hadn't stumbled in yet. Thankfully, that changed.

The Beauty Parlour is a salon which is both committed to beauty and the environment. They are a clean air salon, and they have ammonia-free colour services, which is much safer for everyone, both guests and staff. There space itself it exceptionally gorgeous (you'll be seeing photos of it in a bit, I'm thinking Emilia is just going to have to do our fall photo shoot there) and it even has a little boutique too! hey-o! kristena is back and life is glorious. though jilly-jigs just left for her vaycay, and next week i leave for my vaycay, and then the week after that emilia leaves for her vaycay. so we won't be a united force, again, until september 3rd. but, none of that really matters to you, our dear reader, but what does matter is: fall stock!

allison wonderland just arrived and is currently getting steamed. new lily & jae is slated to arrive tomorrow, new myrtle & pearls on friday and new preloved: any day now.

plus we have a new bag line, called F-Eve, based out of montreal. they're a mix of wool and vinyl, which mean they are totally affordable!

we also have two new jewelry lines. elkencrow is from local designer jessie tempest (okay, she's an edmonton/halifax designer as she spends her semesters at nascad). she has these gorgeous rings which are basically pewter clumps along with pewter clump necklaces and lots of other pretty pieces too. georgina baker is our other newbie at the shop, she based out of vancouver, though originally from new zealand. she takes old trinkets, such as spoons, and turns them into new pieces. i think you'll really love it. we'll hopefully get photos up here shortly.

our darling kristena has been touring the world (europe, specifically) for 6 long weeks and she returns tomorrow! thank god. we all miss her dearly. today is all about getting ready for her arrival back to nokomis. i want the shop to be in tip-top shape for her (i think i'm scared she's going to go and live in paris or something, i will try and woo her over with clean mirrors and organized jewelry cases).

i also want to surprise her with all of the changes in the basement! and she gets to meet kaitlin, the newbie, too! anyway, if you've missed the lovely kristena too, come in say hi!
